Photocatalyticreactionsusingnano-sizedtitaniumdioxide(Ti02)todegradeorganiccompoundsinwaterhavebeendevelopedformanyyears.However,thewideapplicationofthismethodwaslimitedbecauseoftheproblemsassociatedwiththereusageofdispersednanoparticlesandhighcostofmaterials.ThedepositionofTi020ntovarioussubstratesoffersapossiblewaytoovercomeaforementioneddifficultiescl].Glassfibreshavebeenplayingsubstantialrolesasmajorreinforcementsinmanufacturingfibrereinforcedpolymersforvariousapplicationsc2].Herein,wereportedthepreparationoffunctionalglassfibreswithphotocatalyticcapabilitiesforenvironmentalremediation.MonodispersedTi02nanoparticleswereanchoredonE-glassfibresviaasimplehydrothermalprocess,makingthefibressensitivetoUVlight.ThefunctionalfibresexhibitedusingthesefibresweremuchhigherthanthosewithTi02nanoparticlesasaphotocatalyst.Nearly100%ofMBwithaninitialconcentrationof10mg/Lwasremovedwithin50minutes,incontrasttoabout78.6%removalofMBusingTi02nanoparticlesunderthesameexperimentalconditions.Theseenhancementswereattributedtothehighsurfaceareaoffunctionalfibres(281m2/g)andadsorption-concentration-promotedphotocatalysisE31.Inaddition,theremovalrateofMBbyemployingfunctionalglassfibresremainsstableaftercyclicrunningforfivetimes,showingthereusableadvantageoffibresinrealapplication.
